Fall 2021 AFP Consortium Meeting Recap: Focus on Automation and Security

By Jack Condon
In October 2021, the AFP Consortium Fall Meeting took place virtually. Working well within the limitations of a remote meeting, our international team of AFP experts once again came together to continue our work to expand and improve AFP for all our customers.

The focus of the Fall meeting was on two key items:

  • Setup Name –  Architecture to automate the process of loading job-specific print parameters into an IPDS printer was reviewed and voted to Consensus status. This capability will allow customers to setup printer-specific settings in an automated way ahead of a print job submission using AFP, without the need for operator intervention at print time.

  • Data Object Encryption – A detailed review of the customer requirement to encrypt AFP at the object level (images, business graphics, text, barcodes, etc.) was held. Various approaches were discussed, and a working group was put together to determine the best way to address this important business need.

Thanks again to all participants in the Fall Meeting for their hard work! Our next meeting will take place at the end of April 2022, when the AFP Consortium will continue the work needed to keep AFP robust and relevant to support today’s output and presentation needs!
