The Enduring Value of AFP: A Conversation with Hans Christensen of Fiery
As host of the AFP Consortium's Spring Meeting, Fiery plays an active role in supporting the continued evolution of AFP and IPDS. We spoke with Hans Christensen, Systems Architect, IPDS, about the future of AFP, the value of Consortium collaboration, and the strengths that continue to make AFP relevant today.
Why did Fiery become a member of the AFP Consortium?
We joined the AFP Consortium because IPDS is critical for many of our customers, and we want to stay ahead of industry trends to ensure our DFEs continue to meet evolving customer needs. Personally, I’ve been involved with the AFP Consortium for many years. As a developer of DFEs that support IPDS, I remain keenly interested in the evolution and future direction of AFP and IPDS.
What are some takeaways from your participation?
This is a very collaborative group, and the diverse backgrounds of members lead to really interesting discussions, capabilities, and enhancements. The relationships I have built through participation in the Consortium have been helpful when working issues in the field.
How else is your participation beneficial?
We get a better understanding of trends that we may not otherwise be aware of. We also learn about and have the opportunity to implement features as they are finalized, putting us on the leading edge of AFP technology.
What do you consider the biggest opportunity for AFP?
AFP provides a scalable, industrial-strength document architecture for high-volume transactional communications, archiving, and print production. Its focus on document integrity, reliability, and fault-tolerant printing remains especially valuable for applications where accuracy, auditability, and successful delivery are critical. As organizations continue to rely on business-critical communications, those strengths remain as relevant as ever.
What is the biggest challenge facing AFP today, and how is the Consortium working to address it?
One of the biggest challenges is awareness among the next generation of IT professionals. Many simply aren't familiar with AFP, what it does, or where it can provide value within modern document workflows. The Consortium is helping address this challenge through educational initiatives, outreach efforts, and resources designed to make AFP technology more accessible to new audiences and practitioners.
How do you see AFP evolving in the next 5 years? 10 years?
I expect AFP will continue to build on its core strengths: performance, integrity, scalability, and fault tolerance. We will likely see deeper interoperability with PDF-based workflows, support for emerging print technologies, and continued efforts to simplify implementation and integration for users. The future of AFP lies in continuing to make its proven strengths accessible to new applications, workflows, and generations of users.
